Why the front panel comes off at all
Valve could have glued it shut. Instead there are magnets and a published set of drawings.
The first thing we did when the machine arrived was pull the front off. Not carefully: one hand on the bottom edge, a firm tug, and it came away with the sound of four magnets letting go at once. No clips broke because there are none.
A cover, not a lid
Most consoles treat the front as structure. Here it is a cover: the chassis is complete without it, the 120 mm intake sits behind it, and the light bar and the front ports sit in their own strip below it. That means a replacement panel only has to do two things: fit the outline and hold four magnets in the right places.
It also means a bad panel cannot damage anything. The worst it can do is sit proud, rattle, or block airflow. We measure all three before a design goes in the shop.
What the published files changed
Valve released the drawings for their own e-ink front panel, including the 3D files and the firmware. You can argue about how much of a commitment that is, but practically it settled every question we had about tolerances: the magnet spacing, the edge radius, the exact height of the light bar aperture.
We still measured everything ourselves, twice, on two machines, and we found the drawings correct. What they did not tell us is how much the panel can flex before the magnets let go, which is why our panels are 1,8 mm and not the 1,2 mm we started with.
Dust
A magnetic panel means a gap the width of a magnet pad, and dust finds it. Our advice after four months of daily swapping: wipe the pads on the chassis, not the panel. The panel you can rinse.
